We are thrilled to announce the release of our latest research report titled “Having a go: Making individualized living a reality.” This research delves into the various supports that NDIS participants utilize to enhance their capacity to work towards their home and living aspirations. It is a significant part of our ongoing efforts to develop a fresh and innovative approach to home and living within the NDIS framework.

To carry out this research, we joined forces with Scope, a reputable ororganisationn the disability sector. Additionally, we sought guidance and insights from a panel of NDIS participants, along with their families and carers. Together, we focused our efforts on adult NDIS participants who are navigating challenges associated with conditions such as Autism, Cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, Intellectual disability, and Psychosocial disability.

Throughout the course of our study, we identified four crucial areas for action that can greatly facilitate NDIS participants in their pursuit of achieving their home and living goals:

Early Exploration: It is imperative to provide NDIS participants with opportunities to explore home and living options at various stages of life. Accessible and comprehensive information is key in empowering individuals to make informed choices.

Trying Different Options: Encouraging NDIS participants to experiment with different options not only boosts their self-confidence but also alters expectations. This, in turn, aids them in determining what suits their needs best.

Support Systems: Both formal and informal supports play a pivotal role in helping participants build, practice, and maintain essential skills. These supports significantly expand the range of home and living options available to them.

Flexibility in NDIS Plans: Flexible NDIS plans can be a valuable asset in assisting participants to develop their capacities at different stages in their lives, ensuring that their goals remain achievable.
